Punter uses Grand National winnings to land over half a million euro in Paddy Power poker tournament
County Clare hospital attendant, Niall Smyth started 9 April with €10 each-way bet on the English Grand National but after one week ended up with a €550,000 cheque.
Mr Smyth took his winnings from the Grand National and used them to buy his way into an online Irish Open feeder tournament. The prize for this competition was a ticket to enter the Paddy Power Poker Irish Open.
The part-time player outplayed 614 competitors including seasoned professionals and a former world champion over the course of four days at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin.
“It’s all very surreal.” said Mr Smyth.
“It’s been crazy seeing myself on websites and taking phone calls from newspapers, but I’m enjoying it.”
He added: “I won’t be taking any drastic steps but it has set me up well.”
